Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva secured re-election on Sunday with 51.8 percent of the total vote. The electoral court confirmed a lead of nearly 4.4 million votes over his opponent, Flávio Bolsonaro. This victory allows Lula to begin his fourth non-consecutive term on January 5, 2027.

Flávio Bolsonaro refused to concede defeat immediately after the announcement. He requested that the election results be annulled, citing chaos at polling places that followed a last-minute change in voting hours. The son of former president Jair Bolsonaro argued that the timing of the decision compromised the integrity of the process.

The dispute stems from a ruling by Supreme Court Justice Cristiano Zanin. Three minutes before the scheduled 5 p.m. local time deadline, Zanin ordered polls to remain open for two additional hours. Both candidates had requested extensions. Lula cited transportation issues in São Paulo and Salvador, while Bolsonaro pointed to heavy rains in the southern region. The delay postponed the vote tally by two hours.

Lula addressed supporters in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro following the confirmation. He described the outcome as a defeat for denialism and stated that Brazil would not accept being anyone's backyard. He pledged to respect all Brazilians regardless of gender or religion. Wearing red star-shaped glasses, he celebrated with his wife, Rosângela da Silva.

In Rio de Janeiro, the reaction was visible on the streets. Supporters in red shouted at opponents in yellow and green. Rodrigo Valentim, a 51-year-old businessman who supports Bolsonaro, expressed concern about the economic impact. He stated that the country is collapsing and questioned why voters chose Lula despite financial market reactions to the first-round results.

The election occurred against a backdrop of high living costs and security concerns. Bolsonaro had led Lula by more than 2.2 million votes in the first round earlier this month. Sunday's result marks the first time since 1985 that the second-place finisher in a first round won the presidency. Lula reorganized his campaign after the initial loss, targeting young voters and emphasizing democratic values.

Both candidates face scrutiny over corruption involving family members and allies. Bolsonaro is implicated in a current scandal, while Lula previously served more than a year in prison on convictions that were later annulled. Lula will join Donald Trump and Daniel Ortega as the oldest sitting presidents in the Americas, all aged 80 or 81. Lula turns 81 on Tuesday.

The result keeps Brazil, with a GDP of 2.6 trillion US dollars, aligned with Lula's previous stance on sovereignty. This position often places the South American giant at odds with Washington. The electoral court's final announcement ended the day's uncertainty regarding the two-hour extension and the subsequent vote counting delay.
